GM Engine Code Stamp Guide: Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick & Olds Restoration (1968–1977)
Why GM Engine Pad Stampings Matter in Restoration
General Motors muscle car restoration is one of the largest segments of the American collector car hobby. From the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette to the Pontiac GTO, Firebird, and Trans Am, from the Buick Gran Sport to the Oldsmobile 442 — every one of these cars left the factory with an engine pad stamping that encodes the assembly plant, production date, and engine specification. For a correct restoration, that pad stamping must be accurate in both content and font.
GM used a specific stamping system across its divisions that is different from the Ford or Mopar systems. The GM engine pad code includes a plant designator letter, a date code, and a suffix code identifying the specific engine application. This guide explains the system and which stamp sets are available for each GM platform.
The GM Engine Pad Stamp Format
On GM vehicles from 1968–1977, the engine identification stamp was applied to the machined pad on the engine block. The location of this pad varies by engine family:
- Small-block and big-block Chevrolet: Pad is located on the front of the block, just below the right side of the cylinder head, adjacent to the timing cover.
- Pontiac: Pad is located on the front of the block, driver's side, near the distributor area.
- Buick and Oldsmobile: Similar front-of-block location, varying slightly by year and engine.

Stamping Tips for GM Engine Pads
- The GM pad is cast iron on most engines. Use a solid, single-strike technique with the correct weight hammer to achieve the factory impression depth.
- Date code order matters. Stamp the plant code letter first, then the month/day numbers, then the suffix code — never out of order.
- A stamp holder ensures consistent spacing. Our Stamp Holder ($56) and Heavy Duty Stamp Holder ($125) are essential for correct character alignment.
