Porsche Engine and Body Stamp Guide: 356, 911, 912, 914 & 930 — PCA Concours Reference

🔧 Restorer's Quick Reference: This guide covers every major stamping location on the Porsche 356, 911, 912, 914, and 930 — what's stamped where, how codes are decoded, and which RestoStamps Porsche stamp sets are needed for PCA Concours-level restoration.

Why Porsche Stamping Accuracy Matters

Porsche is one of the most stamp-intensive vehicles to restore correctly. Unlike many American cars where only the engine pad and a door tag are scrutinized, a thorough Porsche restoration requires correct stampings on the engine case, the transmission case, the body panels, the trunk lid, the fenders (on the 914), the gas tank, and the data tags. PCA Concours judges examine these stampings to an extremely high standard, and incorrect fonts or missing characters are point deductions that can determine a class winner.

This guide covers every major stamping location across the 356, 911, 912, 914, and 930 — organized by model so you can quickly find what you need for your specific restoration.

Porsche 356: 1950–1965

The 356 is the foundational Porsche, and its stampings are closely studied at both PCA and pre-war-style concours events. The 356 carries engine and transmission stampings on the "third piece" of the case — the fan housing/engine cover area — plus chassis stamps and data tag stampings.

Porsche 911 and 912: 1965–1973 (Early Cars)

Early 911 and 912 models share the same basic stamping system, with stampings on the engine case, transmission, body panels, trunk, and the data tag. The body stampings on early 911s are among the most scrutinized by PCA judges, and missing or incorrect font stampings are immediately identifiable.

Porsche 911 and 930: 1974 and Later Body Stampings

From the mid-1970s through the Carrera/Turbo (930) era, Porsche used an updated body stamping system. The 911/930 body stamps are applied to panels throughout the car, and a correct restoration requires the full set of number and letter stamps in the period-correct font.

Porsche 914: 1969–1976 Fender and Windshield Stamps

The mid-engine 914 carries stampings on both fenders and on the windshield, as well as the engine/fan housing area. The 914 fender stamps and the star stamps for the engine casting are distinct from the 911 system.

Porsche 928: 1978–1995

Porsche 964/993: 1989–1998

Porsche Engine Star Stamps

Like Ford and Harley-Davidson, Porsche engine numbers are preceded by an asterisk or "star" stamp character that is specific to the model and era. Using the correct star stamp is essential for a PCA-correct restoration.
