How to Lay Out Stamped Lettering: Straight Lines, Even Spacing, and Centered Text
Short answer. Lay out stamped lettering in this order: work out the line length on paper, mark a baseline on the part, find the center of the part and the center character of your text, stamp that middle character first, then work out to one end and back to the other.
Stamping left to right and hoping it fits is how text ends up crooked and running off the edge. Center out is how it ends up straight and centered.
Getting the right size stamp is half the job. The other half is landing the characters where you meant to. A crooked line, drifting spacing, or a word that runs off the end of a tag will ruin a part that took hours to get to that point.
This is the layout method we give customers. It works with individual character stamps on a bench block, and it works the same way on a data plate, a knife tang, a belt, or a chassis rail. If you have not sized your stamps yet, start with how to measure a stamp and come back here.
Plan the line before you touch the part
Two numbers decide everything: how long your text will be, and how much room you have.
For the gothic faces used on hand stamps, plan on roughly 0.75 times the character height per character, including the gap between characters.
Line length = number of characters × character height × 0.75
Worked example. You are stamping RESTOSTAMPS, 11 characters, at 1/8 inch, onto a tag with 2 inches of usable width.
- Line length: 11 × 0.125 × 0.75 = 1.03 inches
- Space left over: 2.00 minus 1.03 = 0.97 inches
- Margin each side: 0.97 divided by 2 = 0.485 inches
It fits with room to spare. If the same text had to go on a 1 inch tag, it would not fit at 1/8 inch and you would drop to 3/32 inch, which gives 0.77 inches. Work that out on paper, before the part is on the bench, every time.

Then write the text out on paper at full size, or print it, and lay it against the part. Two minutes with a printout catches problems that a calculation misses, like a logo or a border eating into the space you were counting on.

Set a baseline
A baseline is a physical reference the bottom of every character sits on. Without one you are aligning by eye, and the eye drifts. This is the single highest-value thing you can do for a clean layout, and it takes about a minute.
Tape
The fastest method and the one most makers land on. Run a strip of painter's tape or masking tape across the part with its edge exactly where you want the bottom of the characters. Set each stamp down, slide it until it stops against the tape edge, then strike. The tape gives you a positive stop instead of a visual guess. It also protects the surface from the odd slipped stamp.
A scribed or marked line
A layout fluid and a scribe give you a fine, precise line on steel. It is more accurate than tape and it does not move. The downside is that you have to remove the scribe line afterward, so keep it light and keep it where the mark will cover it, or where you will be finishing anyway.
A clamped straightedge
Clamp a steel rule or a parallel to the part with the edge at the baseline. This is the most rigid stop of the three, and it is the right answer for a long line or a production run. Make sure the clamp is not pulling the part off flat on the block.
Adhesive stamping guides
Printed guide strips that stick to the work, with tick marks for spacing already on them. Useful on jewelry blanks and small tags where tape is fiddly. They cost a little per use and they are quick.
Whichever you use, register the same feature of the stamp against it every time. The bottom edge of the shank, not the character. If you register on the character you will be aligning a different feature on every letter, and the baseline drifts.
Center the text, working outward
Stamping from the left and hoping it lands centered does not work. Any small error in spacing accumulates across the line, and by the last character it is visible. Work from the middle out and the error splits in both directions, so half of it disappears.
- Mark the center of the part. A light center mark on the baseline.
- Count your characters and find the middle one. Write the text out and number each character. Include spaces as characters, because they take up room.
- Odd number of characters: stamp the middle one on the center mark. RESTOSTAMPS is 11 characters, so the middle is number 6, the second S. That character lands dead on center.
- Even number of characters: offset by half a character. The center falls between two characters, so shift each of them half a character width off the center mark. At 1/8 inch that is about 0.047 inch each way.
- Work out to one end. Middle to the right, one character at a time.
- Come back and work out to the other end. Middle to the left. Do not start from the outside and stamp inward.
The reason this works is that you are never accumulating error over more than half the line, and any leftover error lands in the margins, where nobody sees it.
Keep the spacing even
Uneven gaps are more obvious than a slightly crooked line. Three ways to control them, in order of how much they cost you.
Use the stamp body as the spacer
The free method. After you strike a character, slide the next stamp up until its shank just touches where the last one sat, then back it off a consistent hair. Because every stamp in a set has the same shank, the shank is a built-in ruler. This is how most people do it, and with a bit of practice it is good enough for anything that is not a precision part.
Shim spacers
Cut two pieces of flat stock to your desired gap. Stamp the first character, put a spacer against the shank where the stamp just was, set the next stamp firmly against the spacer, and strike. Move the spacer along and repeat. Slower, and noticeably more even than eyeballing it.
A stamping jig
A carriage that holds the stamp square and indexes it along a rail by a fixed amount. Commercial jigs exist, and shop-built ones out of angle stock and a spacer are common. Worth it for production runs and for anything where the line has to be right the first time. Overkill for a single tag.
Do not crowd characters. Each strike throws up a raised lip. Two characters set too close will have their lips run into each other, and the gap between them fills in and reads muddy. Leave at least a quarter of a character width of clear metal between characters, more in aluminum and other soft metals that flow hard.
Keep every character square
A line can sit perfectly on its baseline and still look wrong if individual characters are rotated a few degrees. It is the most common thing people cannot put their finger on when a stamping looks amateur.
- Find the index on the shank. Most character stamps carry the character mark on one face of the shank so you know which way is up without looking at the face. Use it. Every time.
- Hold the stamp the same way for every character. Same hand, same grip, same side of the body. Consistency beats care.
- Use a stamp holder. A holder keeps the tool perpendicular and square, keeps your fingers out of the way, and takes most of the rotation error out of the job.
- Square the shank against your straightedge. If you are using a clamped rule as the baseline, a square-shanked stamp registers flat against it and cannot rotate.
Keep the depth consistent
Mixed depths read as sloppy even when the layout is perfect. Depth comes from three things and all three have to stay constant across the line.
- Support. The part must be backed by the same solid surface under every character. If part of the line hangs over the edge of the bench block, those characters will come out shallow.
- Blow. One strike per character, the same weight of hammer, the same swing. Do not tap some and hit others.
- Character area. This is the one people miss. A wide character like M or W has more surface driving into the metal than an I or a 1, so the same blow puts it in shallower. Ease off very slightly on narrow characters, or accept a small difference and go for consistency on the wide ones.
Run a full dry run on scrap of the same material and thickness before the real part. Ten characters on scrap tells you the hammer and the blow you need, and that carries over to every piece after it.
Multiple lines
Line spacing is measured baseline to baseline. The working rule:
Baseline to baseline = 1.5 to 2 times the character height. At 1/8 inch characters that is 0.19 to 0.25 inch between baselines.
Tighter than 1.5x and the descender space closes up and the block of text reads cramped. Wider than 2x and the lines stop reading as a group. If the two lines are different character sizes, base the spacing on the larger one.
Lay out and stamp the whole first line before you move the baseline. Reset the tape or the straightedge for line two rather than trying to work off the first line by eye. And center each line independently. A short second line centered under a long first line looks right. The same line left-aligned under it usually does not, unless the whole block is deliberately left-aligned against a common margin.
Arcs, curves, and round stock
Text on an arc
Set the arc first, as a scribed line or a stuck-down circle guide. Then stamp each character rotated so it sits perpendicular to the arc at that point, not parallel to the one before it. Work from the center character outward, same as a straight line. Adhesive circle guides make this much easier than it sounds, and they are the reason curved text on jewelry blanks looks clean.
Curved surfaces
A flat stamp face on a curved part only touches along one line. The character goes in deep at the contact point and fades to nothing at its edges. Three ways around it:
- A radiused stamp face, cut concave to match the diameter of the part. This is the correct answer for production work on round stock, and it is something we cut to order. Send us the diameter.
- Narrow single-character stamps, which contact a smaller arc and therefore mark more evenly. Combined with a light rocking motion this works on gentle curves.
- Roll marking, where the part rotates against a roll die. The right process for high volume on cylinders, and it needs the equipment.
On a shaft or a tube, mark the highest point of the curve and lay the baseline along the axis, not around the circumference. Characters running around a small diameter will not read.

What to do when it goes wrong
Honestly, options are limited, and that is why the layout work up front matters so much.
- Shallow mark on soft metal. Sometimes it can be planished flat with a smooth-faced hammer and a backing block, then dressed and re-stamped. You will usually still see a ghost.
- Deep mark. Fill, dress, and refinish, or live with it. On a hidden face, live with it.
- One character out of line. On decorative and maker's work, a slightly irregular hand-stamped line is a feature, not a defect. Do not chase perfection on something that is supposed to look handmade.
- Wrong character stamped. If the piece is not finished, this is the moment to start the part over rather than to start repairing.
One thing to be clear about: re-stamping a serial number, VIN, or other identifying number carries legal requirements that vary by state and country. If you are restoring an original identifying number, check what your jurisdiction requires before anything is struck. When to stop hand stamping and order a one-piece die
Individual character stamps are flexible and cheap, and they put the layout burden on you every single time. A one-piece die has the whole line cut into a single tool, laid out and spaced correctly by us, and every strike is identical.

The break-even is lower than most people expect. If you are stamping the same line more than about twenty times, the die pays for itself in saved layout time and in the parts you do not scrap.

How do you stamp letters in a straight line?

Usually rotation rather than position. Individual characters twisted a few degrees read as crooked even when every baseline is perfect. Use the index mark on the shank, hold the stamp the same way every time, and use a stamp holder.
Can you fix a stamping mistake?
Rarely well. A shallow mark in soft metal can sometimes be planished flat, dressed, and re-stamped, and you will usually still see a ghost. A deep mark means fill and refinish or live with it. This is why the dry run on scrap matters.
Should I use individual stamps or a one-piece die?
Individual stamps when the text changes on every part. A one-piece die when the text is the same, when there is artwork or a logo involved, when the space is tight, or when the part is curved. Past about twenty repeats, the die pays for itself.
